Barbara S. Grushesky-Shafran, M.Ed.
Executive Director and Founder
Barbara Shafran, M.Ed. received her Master’s degree in foreign language education in 1994 from the University of Pittsburgh. She has taught elementary school through college-aged students for 25 years in a variety of subjects including: Spanish, Psychology, English, Microsoft Applications and Business Management.
While attending graduate school, Mrs. Shafran worked at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic’s Neuropsychiatric Assessment and Rehabilitation Services clinic (now closed), and she also took extensive coursework in educational testing and measurement. This background, combined with the experience of helping her own children to receive appropriate accommodations from a school district, resulted in the creation of the Parent Empowerment Network program (PEN). This program helps parents, professionals and school districts to more effectively serve struggling students.
Mrs. Shafran’s 7 years of experience teaching at local two-year business schools inspired Barbara to develop Moving Forward Pittsburgh’s unique From the Inside Out™ on-line, holistic career training program and curriculum, to provide an effective curriculum that would boost the outcomes of existing non-profit, career training programs by addressing often neglected psychological and urban vernacular language issues. Now closed, from September, 2012 through September, 2015, this program offered business English and psychological coping skills to 20 adults in transition and assisted them in job placement.
In addition to founding Moving Forward Pittsburgh, Inc., she and her husband also own Ceeva, Inc., an IT services provider in the Greater Pittsburgh area for over 20 years. Their experience providing IT services to both for-profits and non-profits inspired the creation of the Operation E-Cycle Program in 2010 which delivered over 450 pieces of equipment to over 60 nonprofits. As of May 1, 2018, this program which provided technology equipment — computers, monitors, printers and more — to local non-profits at little or no cost was ended because of the increase in computer leasing which has resulted in few equipment donations from local companies.
Fluent in Spanish, and familiar with Portuguese, French, German and Finnish, Barbara also has worked 10 years in international customer service and export logistics at several local Pittsburgh manufacturing companies. She is on the Board of Directors for Independent Family Resource Group (www.ifrgroup.org) and The Autism Caring Center (www.autismcaringcenter.com). She is an Advisory Board Member for Classrooms Without Borders (www.classroomswithoutborders.org) and volunteers for several other community organizations. She is also an herbal esthetician and founder of Shafran Herbals (www.shafranherbals.com).
