States Barbara Shafran, M.Ed., Founder and Executive Director of Moving Forward Pittsburgh and Director of its Parent Empowerment Network Program, “Kids who are falling through the cracks in the public education system — those that are not qualifying for special education assistance from schools because their differences are not “substantial enough” impairment — are frustrated and are more at risk for dropping out of high school or self-medicating with recreational drug use, putting them at risk to become addicts. By pooling community resources and offering a network of assistance and advocacy, we strive to help those kids who just need a little boost to get to grade-level and enjoy learning again.”
